Being and interior designer my basic objective is to do problem solving inside of one’s house. I do this with style, fitting to their personality, and adapt it how they, or their family, functions inside the space called “home”.

I have been doing this off and on for many years for companies like Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn, and as an independent consultant. On several occasions I have run across a problem I could not solve, and this dealt with adding the warm glow and aesthetic appeal of what a lamp can contribute to a certain spot. The problem lies when the need is there, in a particular spot, but no outlet is available. Either an extension cord would have to be strung across the floor, or under a rug (presenting both safety and fire issues) or an expensive electrician would have to be hired to retro fit a new plug adjacent to this need. More often than not, this problem would remain unsolvable frustrating me as a designer. Dealing with this issue for many years, I often thought, “Why isn’t there anything on the market that is a cordless decorative lamp, something that will solve this small issue and solve it with style?”. After scouring the internet and retail world, I could find nothing (worth mentioning).

Longer story shorter... my husband of 17 years is a talented product designer (owner of Splitscreen Studio) with efforts focusing on the home furnishing market. He has designed hundreds of lamps, and we both ended up discussing, scratching our heads, stating “Why can’t we bring this to market ourselves?”. More than a year later, from experiments, to factory tours, to working with the right team overseas, to bank meetings, to patent lawyer meetings, to prototype one, two and three, we finally are bringing all of our hard work directly to you, our customers, via our website: www.modernlantern.com
